Postcard Strip-Ad for Blue Boy (reissue)

An ad for Postcard Recordings of Scotland when the the label was resuscitated in the early 1990s.
This is the sort of thing that makes me wish I hadn't binned all my old NMEs and other such weeklies and magazines so long ago. Taken from the NME, 12th of June 1993 this cutting features an ad announcing the forthcoming reissue release of Orange Juice's 'Blue Boy' single and the 'The Heather's On Fire' compilation as well as future releases from Vic Godard, Paul Quinn, and The Nectarine N°9.

Full of rather homoerotic undertones and tongue-in-cheek blurbs it would probably irk some of the politically correct crowd nowadays. Distasteful and sexist they'd say. They'd find it offensive, be indignant for five minutes and then get back to their Caramel Brulée Latte, their smartphones and all the utter bollocks that's on Twitter, Facebook etc. etc.

Anyhow, I wonder what those involved with this ad (i.e. the Postcard artists showcased on it) would have to say about it these days?

The Vaselines have undertaken a 13-date European tour to promote their new album, V For Vaselines. The band will be setting out on a 13-date North-American tour beginning mid-January comprising of ten dates in the US and three in Canada.

Getting away from the (mostly) Postcard Records stuff that I post for the moment and moving onto other Scottish bands that I've neglected a bit.  Bands like Simple Minds, The Associates, and Teenage Fanclub. Three great bands (at least for a few years for the first two) whom I really liked at some moment in my life. Of course, Teenage Fanclub and Simple Minds are still doing the rounds; the latter having released a brand new album just last month (Oct. 2014), but the much regretted Associates more or less fell apart when Alan Rankine left the band in 1982 shortly after the release of the fabulous 'Sulk' album. Rankine's departure leading to the late Billy MacKenzie more or less embarking on a solo career; albeit under the Associates name, until around 1990. Almost everything released after 1982 paled by comparison to the bands' previous output. A spent force in which; apart from a couple of Mackenzie's later solo efforts, I lost interest. Simple Minds, I lost interest in them shortly after the 'Once Upon A Time' album (1985). I like, and still do, most of the stuff released beforehand. Might have been the fact that they had turned into a stadium rock band, à la U2, that put me off them. I imagine though that it was some other band (more than likely The Jesus And Mary Chain) that had caught my fancy. I'd moved on to other pastures. As for Teenage Fanclub; that's another story which I'll come back to later.

The Postcard 'Factory Sit-In'

Featured above is a very interesting Postcard Records artifact.
It's a handprinted, limited-edition poster for Aztec Camera’s first gig outside Scotland. Gig which took place at Manchester De Ville’s in August 1981.
This image was sent to me courtesy of John Ashton who's selling it on eBay as well as an original Postcard brochure and a fanzine. Items which Postcard sumpremo Alan Horne sent to him 1981. Includes a handwritten cover note by Horne written on the back of a torn off brown Postcard Records record sleeve.

Stephen 'n' Eugene

 Eugene Kelly (The Vaselines) playing live with The Pastels, circa 1987. Eugene appears on their 1989 album “Sittin’ Pretty” singing backing vocals on “Baby You’re Just You” and “Swerve”. He also appeared on their “Comin’ Through” EP in 1987, playing the autoharp and doing backing vocals.

Paul Groovy : Happening Right Then

Marcel Duchamp once said: "Everybody hates it nowadays but forty years from now everyone will love it." Or something like that. I think. Anyway, this could be said for a good few of the bands that came about back in the dark ages.* Particularly for some outfits like Josef K, Fire Engines, Scars, The Vaselines, Shop Assistants, who appear to be more famous now than they ever were in their -shortlived- heyday. It's really quite amazing how some bands / people /events are revered nowadays. I imagine it's mostly down to nostalgia for a good few folks but often, this adulation, is from kids who might well be young enough to be any original fan's grandchildren. Just take a browse through Tumblr. There you'll find; besides the prodigious amount of pornography that fills up a lot of space, lots of photos or scans of diverse documents either relating to C81 or C86 and the bands that were featured on those two tapes as well as lots of bands like the ones mentioned above. A major setback, however, as with most posts on Tumblr, is that a lot of photos and documents are endlessly reblogged with neither any information attached to them nor any credits nor source details. Luckily though; for anyone really interested in this period in rock/pop/punk/post-rock/twee's back pages; and particularly for those who want to know more about all the great Scottish bands from back then, there are people like Simon Goddard, Simon Reynolds, Richard King, and Sam Knee. All of them have either written about Postcard Records, Josef K, Orange Juice, The Jesus And Mary Chain, The Pastels, et al or documented the various scenes, labels, etc. Sam Knee's book, A Scene In Between, is particularly good for lots of original and unseen photos.
Anyhow, another couple of very interesting books are to be published in early 2015. The first one is Neil Taylor's 'C86 & All That: Indie 1983-86 A History' and Paul Groovy's 'Happening Right Then' which will feature, as well as some text, original photos taken by the author himself.

I'll let Paul Groovy fill you in on the details of his must have, forthcoming book:

"The Kickstarter campaign for "Happening Right Then!" starts next week, with the finished book being published Spring 2015.
It will be a hardback book with 150+ pages of my photos, with comments/recollections by many of the bands/people featured, along with a foreword by Alan Mcgee
It starts with The Pastels from the Spontaneous Happening at The Venue, Glasgow in May 83,and ends with The Pastels at The Room At The Top in Dec 85. Inbetween there will be photos of TV Personalities, Shop Assistants, The Times, Direct Hits, Nikki Sudden, Jasmine Minks(their 1st gig),Primal Scream (their 1st gig!),and a whole lot more.
Publication will tie in with Neil Taylors "C86 & All That" book (one of my pics is being used as the cover, and some more are to be included inside),and the launch for that book will take place at the original Living Room at the Adams Arms. An exhibition of my photos will also be part of the launch for Neil's book."

Vaselines : Straight of Yr Girlfriends Stomach (Press Releases)

 A couple of rather interesting documents relating to the first release by The Vaselines in May 1987 on the Scottish record label, 53rd&3rd. Label founded in 1985 by Stephen Pastel, Sandy McLean and David Keegan.
These are scans of the press releases that came with test pressings of their debut single "Son of a Gun" -though at that time it was still known as "Straight of Yr Girlfriends Stomach". For some unknown reason the title was changed before the actual release date of the 14th August, 1987.
Interesting to note that the Vaselines twosome, Frances and Eugene, are being sold as "fun lovin', normal, healthy, fuck-obsessed adolescents".

Jazzateers : Don't Let Your Son Grow Up To Be A Cowboy

As I'm back at work I'm going to have a lot less time to post at SoYS. Managed to update a few older posts and photos but still have a fair amount to do. In the meantime there's some good news from Cherry Red with the release of the
Jazzateers : Don't Let Your Son Grow Up To Be A Cowboy. An album that features most of their unreleased recordings from 1981-1982.
This release includes the long-thought-lost sessions for Postcard Records, combining nearly two albums and overseen by Postcard supremo and Jazzateers’ manager Alan Horne.  One of the tracks, Wasted, was scheduled to be the final Postcard single (81-14) and was produced by Orange Juice’s Edwyn Collins. Unfortunately, like a few other scheduled releases; Wasted was shelved when the label fell apart.
Don't Let Your Son Grow Up To Be A Cowboy is a must have recording for any Postcard Records fan.

Aztec Camera talk about doing a bit of rehearsing.

Excellent document from Smash Hits, August 30th 1984. Features several band shots and a run down on their time in Manchester recording the 'Knife' album. An article also in which Roddy Frame reckons that Aztec Camera "don't really fit in with anything" and that he "can't be bothered with the pop star life-style."
Smashing stuff indeed.

A rather interesting document from the New Musical Express, 15  September 1990. Pages 20-21 of that week's issue featured a Jesus And Mary Chain family tree compiled by Paul Barber. Fascinating stuff where you'll find a complete rundown of all the Mary Chain line-ups (as well as those of Bobby Gillespie's Primal Scream) from the band's inception to the 'Automatic' tour of '89.

Paul Haig : Heaven Sent (poster)

This was a UK release on Island Records only; you can see the Island Records logo in the bottom right corner. However, Les Disques du Crépuscule allocated it's own internal Cat. N° for it : TWI 149.
The back sleeve of the original vinyl features photography by Sheila Rock but there's no mention of who did the artwork on the front cover -as featured on this poster. I have the Les Disques de Crépuscule/Ariola version (Cat. N°600 817) and the artwork isn't credited on it either.

Forthcoming release from the recently revived Factory Benelux label is a highly-desirable Best-Of from The Wake. A must have for any fan of this very fine Glasgow band which will be available in early September.

"Factory Benelux presents Testament, a comprehensive ‘best of’ collection by influential Scottish group The Wake, including tracks recorded for cult labels Factory and Sarah Records.
The Wake formed in Glasgow in early 1981 after singer/guitarist Caesar left future pop stars Altered Images. Joined by Carolyn Allen (keyboards), Steven Allen (drums) and Bobby Gillespie (bass), the band joined Factory the following year, recording debut mini album Harmony at Strawberry Studios in Stockport and subsequently hailed as the missing indiepop link between Factory and Postcard Records. After Gillespie departed for Primal Scream and the Jesus and Mary Chain, The Wake issued second album Here Comes Everybody in 1985, with standout track O Pamela later covered by artful French ensemble Nouvelle Vague.

After leaving Factory the group joined cult Bristol imprint Sarah Records, releasing a brace of indiepop singles and albums in the Nineties before going on hiatus. Caesar and Carolyn reconvened as The Wake in 2009, releasing fifth album A Light Far Out three years later, with more new material due in 2015.

Testament combines key album tracks with popular singles including On Our Honeymoon, Something Outside, Talk About the Past, Of the Matter and Crush the Flowers. Also included are a previously unreleased 7” edit of Pale Spectre, and (on the CD only) 2012 outtake Clouds Disco. The vinyl edition includes a 54 minute bonus CD featuring 21 early live and demo recordings from 1981/82, preserved in the tape archive of Joy Division/New Order manager Rob Gretton. Among these priceless lost recordings are 7 songs never before heard even on bootlegs.

A bit of a rarity this 3-track EP by The Boy Hairdressers on Stephen Pastel's 53rd & 3rd label. From the ashes of this band rose the mighty and fabulous Teenage Fanclub. World-renowned, contemporary visual artist, Jim Lambie, was also a member of this short-lived outfit. Lambie's most recent installation is 'The Album Pathway'; created as part of the commission for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Cultural Programme. In total more than 2000 bands are referenced in the work.
I've already featured this disc in a previous post but this one is a shot of the label on the actual vinyl. I've also updated the photo of the cover art at my Flickr page.

Some of the interesting things you'll see on a long-distance flight.

Flyer from a Les Disques du Crépuscule show at the Beursschouwburg in Brussels in 1982. Paul Haig heads the bill on a night that also featured Richard Jobson (former lead singer with the Skids and later TV presenter and film director), The Names (who would records some really fine discs with Factory Benelux and Les Disques du Crépuscule), and Winston Tong from Tuxedomoon. This show was part of a tour that played 14 or so dates across Belgium, France, and the Netherlands. The tour "centered around a flexible core of The Durutti Column, Richard Jobson, The Names and Paul Haig. Also playing at various dates were Antena, Marine, Isolation Ward, and Tuxedomoon regulars Blaine Reininger, Steven Brown and Winston Tong."

A cassette tape live recording of the "Dialogue North/South" tour appeared later that year under the title of 'Some of the interesting things you'll see on a long distance flight' (TWI 081) and featured 5 tracks from Paul Haig as well as several from Richard Jobson and Tuxedomoon, The Durutti Column, etc. (see full tracklist here).

The tape is a valuable document from the golden era of Les Disques du Crépuscule and a must have for anyone who likes Paul Haig's music.

Making a wee break form the recent flow of Paul Haig posts; Some more up soon. Here we have a pic of the youthful Jim Reid entertaining the punters at some JAMC show in 1984. Looks very much like a homemade-stencilled shirt there. Unless, of course, it was a shirt made by some overestimated, overpayed fashion designer cashing in like they all do nowadays. Doubtful. Fuck, fuck, fuck, indeed, Jim.
Love that so-awestruck-I-have-to-scratch-my-arm look on the (then) kid in the Joy Division tee.

Now this is really an interesting document. Have never seen this before. Apparently it's a press release dating from around mid-1980 with Postcard (Alan Horne) presenting the label's three latest and what they hoped would be their forthcoming releases for January 1981. Unfortunately, the Josef K album never saw the light of day; the first vinyl issue of their debut album was finally released in November 2012 on LTM Recordings. Neither did the "new discoveries" Altered Images or Fire Engines singles ever appear on the label but that's another story. A story you can read about in Simon Goddard's recent 'Simply Thrilled:The Preposterous Story of Postcard Records' book.

Return To Sender : Postcard Records

I've just been given access to some exciting documents by Paul Haig (Josef K). I'll be posting a few here over the next few days I imagine and would sincerely like to thank Paul for giving permission to do so. A good few of these documents are pretty rare; I don't recall ever seeing some of them before. First up we have a scan of a page of a Stuart Maconie article which dates back to the early 90s I imagine. There's no mention of which magazine it is but it might be from the NME, Select or Mojo. Includes the full Postcard Discography (released/unreleased) which I've reproduced in a larger format below.

I'm currently re-posting all of the very earliest posts at Sound of Young Scotland -most date back to 2007. Been removing some of the images as well as updating them or adding new (and better) ones. The layout in some those older posts isn't that good either so it'll take me a wee while to get them all sorted out. I'm half way through June 2007, so far, but I still have the rest of that year to do as well as all of 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011.

Josef K implode!

There's a Paul Haig and Josef K article in Mojo 249 / August 2014. All about how, after their unfortunately too short career (1979-1982), the band fell apart.
I don't have this issue yet as it's not available at my local stores at the moment but I'll post more on this later when I do get my hands on a copy.

First release by NME / Rough Trade Tapes 1981. To get this you had to order it through the New Musical Express. 30,000 copies were sent out. As well as the tape, I still have the original 32-page Owner's Manual; which you had to put together by cutting out various pages over a number of weeks from the NME and then folding and assembling them. You had to be patient in those days. Home computers and internet weren't around then. Looking at these pages one can see how much the Velvet Underground was important to Alan Horne and the whole conception of what he wanted Postcard to be.
This is the second of three posts featuring the Postcard Records illustrations to be found in NME / Rough Trade C81 Owner’s Manual. Next one will feature Aztec Camera.

On the right is the packaging for a condom that I picked up, a while back, in a nearby agnes b store. On the left is the CD single artwork for the Primal Scream 'If They Move, Kill 'Em' EP. The cover for the Primal Scream disc is credited to Julian House @ Intro. There is no credit on the condom packaging. Possible copyright infringement, maybe?
Bottom left there's a 'Stuka' button badge and the original still sealed condom that came with the agnès b pack.

When Alan Horne revived Postcard Records around 1990 I wasn't very interested in what the label had to offer. As I said in my previous post, I'd moved on to other things but when I learnt that they were releasing some Orange Juice recordings I couldn't resist getting my grubby hands on them. This was one of them -the others being the 'The Heather's On Fire' singles compilation and the reissues of 'Love Sick / Blue Boy" on vinyl and CD single formats.

I picked up this Edwyn Collins CD single while visiting a car-boot sale the other week. As it was on top of the pile I noticed it right away and immediately acquired it for a mere 0.50€. If it had been underneath I wouldn't even have looked at the pile of CDs. I must admit that I'm not too keen at all on 'A Girl Like You.' Collins' most known as well as his biggest selling hit is the song I like least in all of the Collins/Orange Juice discs I have. Like the Eagles' utterly dreadful 'Hotel California' it seems to be on the car radio every time I turn it on. Must admit though that I will listen to it whereas The Eagles... No way!
My preference goes to his 'Coffee Table Song' and '50 Shades of Blue' EPs to this any day. At the same time, I have to confess that by the time it did come out I'd moved onto other things like Autechre, Aphex Twin, and a lot of new electronic music. Collins' career was a thing of the past to me. Still is today though I know that I should check out at least his latest releases. I'll get round to it one day. Promise.

The Jesus And Mary Chain in Slow Dazzle

Slow Dazzle. A magazine named after a John Cale song and which you could acquire all for the princely sum of 30pence! An excellent fanzine put together by Chris Davidson. This is the 6th and final issue of the Greenock based fanzine which appeared in late 1984. Features an interview with Creation Records
 -Alan McGee, Dick Green and Joe Foster- and an interview with the Jesus And Mary Chain at their Venue show (Oct, 84), when Bobby Gillespie joined the band. 

You can see the ‘Original cover artwork for the sixth and final issue of the superb Greenock-based fanzine Slow Dazzle, the brainchild of Chris Davidson, a mover and shaker in the area’ in Sam Knee's recent and excellent, 'A Scene In Between' book. The artwork was created by Greenock musician George Miller.
