Orange Juice - Postcard Records promo pic

As promised another wonderful item sent to me by Scottish Post-Punk. This time we have a Postcard Records promo shot for Orange Juice. Not at all sure who took the photograph so maybe someone out there could advise me. Item acquired by Scottish Post-Punk from Akiko Hada who appears to have been a keen collector of Postcard Records artifacts.

Sound of Young Scotland

Been a bit busy over the past few weeks and haven't had much time to take care of business here at SoYS. Will have a couple of new posts up soon.
Promise!

Singalong with Orange Juice

Poor Old Soul by Orange Juice on Postcard Records.

Another excellent clipping which comes by way of Steve MacNamee's collection of memorabilia, press cuttings, and other tasty artifacts from the Postcard Records era.

This clipping features a photograph of the band by Harry Papadopoulos and the lyrics to the 1981 'Poor Old Soul' single.

Not quite sure where this from: could be Record Mirror, or Sounds, or any one of the numerous music papers that existed back then.
Maybe someone can fill me in?*

Anyhow, thanks, once again to Steve MacNamee for this document. More fom his treasure chest up soon.

*I'd like to thank Peter Clark for letting me know (via comments) that this is from Smash Hits 61 issued on the 2nd of April 1981

An interesting snippet to read on the recent 30th anniversary release of this landmark album. Review of The Jesus And Mry Chain's 'Psycho Candy' by William Shaw in Smash Hits, 20th of November, 1985.

Josef K : Postcard Records promo pic

Another wonderful item sent to me by Scottish Post-Punk. This time we have a Postcard Records promo shot for Josef K. Photograph by Harry Papadopoulos. This item, like the one beforehand (Postcard Records 1981 press release ), was acquired by Scottish Post-Punk from Akiko Hada who lived in London in the early 80's and was a friend of the late Annick Honoré (co-founder of Les Disques Du Crepuscule and Factory Benelux). Akiko appears to have been a keen collector of Postcard Records artifacts by the look of it.

Next up will be an Orange Juice Postcard Records promo shot from the same era.

Postcard Records 1981 press release

Yet another Postcard Records artefact sees the light of day once more. This time it's a press release from 1981 for the release of Josef K's 'Chance Meeting' single.

Alos includes an 'Other Happenings' section which fills us in on all that is, ahem, happening on the Postcard front.

Highly amusing last paragraph.

All the above is true.

Paul Haig : Les Disques du Crépuscule tapes

Well yesterday was once more Cassette Store Day. Not nearly as big as event as Record Store Day has become but one than seems to be gaining impetus as the format (doomed to disappear completely) makes a (sort of) comeback. Anyhow, I didn't pick up any tapes myself but was glad to receive the above pic which Postcard aficionado, Graeme McNay sent me. I don't recall ever having seen a Paul Haig tape but Graeme has managed to acquire two of them.
The 5-track 'The Only Truth' tape was released on Island/Les Disques Du Crépuscule in 1984; whereas the 'Warp of Pure Fun' tape, which appears to be pretty rare (it isn't listed at Discogs), was released apparently only in Belgium in late 1985 at the same time as the vinyl version.

Wouldn't mind at all if the recently revived Les Disques du Crépuscule reissued these tapes.

Orange Juice : I wish I was a Postcard

Orange Juice's 'Felicity' flexidisc.

One-sided flexidisc originally given away with the first 1000 copies of the debut Orange Juice single ("Falling and Laughing" Postcard 80-1) but also available separately from Postcard. Some copies were also given away with the Ten Commandments fanzine. Plain white sleeve hand-stamped with Postcard's drumming kitten logo.
Recorded, like the 'The Felicity' Flexi Session tape, by Malcolm Ross on a cassette at one of the band's early shows at Teviot Row Edinburgh on April 21st 1979.

Orange Juice : Original artwork (1)

Some very exciting images of orignal artwork for a few Orange Juice releases have been forwarded to me by Scots post-punk. they belong to one Steve McNamee who picked them up for a song (indeed!) an an auction a few years ago. This one features the artwork for the 'Two Hearts Together / Hokoyo" single that was released in 1982. Artwork by Pete Watson.

Teenage Superstars:
The Sound of Young Scotland 2

The first preview of the second feature film in the 'Sound of Young Scotland' story

Grant McPhee and the producers of the recent 'Big Gold Dream' follow it up with another documentary/film on the thriving music scene in Scotland.

This time the focus is on the many great bands that appeared in the wake of the demise of Postcard Records and the rise of 53rd & 3rd and Creation record labels.

Catch the link for the trailer below for some insight of the upcoming film.

The hits just keep on coming!
Another priceless document from the golden age of Postcard Records and of Orange Juice.

This one comes courtesy of
On The Verge of Want
who captured this excellent photo of Edwyn Collins at the Bungalow Bar in Paisley (Scotland) way back in June 1980.

If my sources are correct; other Postcard bands of that era, Josef K and The Go-Betweens, were on the same bill on what must have been a great night out.

Falling & Laughing (Original cover photograph)

I really can't thank enough @Scots Post-Punk for all the amazing photos and documents that turn up on his Twitter timeline -and which he always makes sure to post to me as well. This time we have the original photo of
Edwyn Collins, James Kirk and David McClymont that was used for the cover of Orange Juice's debut single, 'Falling and Laughing' on Postcard Records in 1980.

The photograph is by Peter McArthur and I believe, though I'm not really sure, that it's part of David McClymont's personal collection of Orange Juice artefacts.

Josef K & Orange Juice @ Plan K, 1980

In December, 1980  Josef K and Orange Juice went to Brussels at the invitation of Les Disques du Crépuscule for a New Year's Eve show at, former sugar refinery, Plan K.
Apparently 2000 people attended this show; also broadcast live on Belgian radio. I wonder if the recording still exists?

While in Brussels, Josef K recorded their excellent  'Sorry For Laughing / Révélation (TWI 023) single for Les Disques du Crépuscule.
The single was recorded at an 8-track studio in Brussels on January 2nd, 1981 and was released in March the same year.

Orange Juice : Haçienda, Manchester

Some fine, vintage shots of Orange Juice (Malcolm Ross -left- Edwyn Collins -right top & bottom), bought on Ebay and of which copies were kindly sent to me by Scots Post-Punk. According to the eBay seller the photos were taken by David Cawley or Graham Stirling at The Hacienda, Manchester in either June 1982, or on 4 April 1983. The previous owner is not sure of the date when the pics were taken but as he was at both shows he thinks either or both of the two photographers were present at the same gigs.

The seller also has a tape of the 1983 gig which he intends to sell on eBay one of these days. Scots Post-Punk informed me that the tape hasn't showed up on eBay for the time being so keep your eyes peeled.

Orange Juice : Rip It Up (poster)

Image : Courtesy of and ©Graeme McNay

As with Factory Records (particularly anything related to Joy Division and New Order) there has been a huge resurgence of interest in bands from the Sound of Young Scotland, Postcard Records era the past few years. Bands like Orange Juice, Josef K, Fire Engines, Scars, and a whole host of others are enjoying a popularity that was distnctly lacking for a few of them in their heyday. Books have been published, exhibitions set up, films and documentaries are arriving in cinemas soon. Of course, most of these bands no longer exist but some continue to record and play under various other guises and line-ups. It's a whole new lease of life that's opened up to quite a few those musicians thanks to a few people who are setting the record straight, filing the facts, -while nostalgia beats its incessant drum and some of us hark back on the days of our long gone and, what seems in some cases, a not so misspent youth.

Thanks to some fans more and more unseen goodies are cropping up every now and then on the net. Today's image comes courtesy of Ayrshire lad, Graeme McNay -who besides cycling appears to be a huge music fan and particularly one of Orange Juice.
Thanks for the image, Graeme. Much appreciated.

The Future Past : Orange Juice

Images courtesy of and ©stillunusual
........................................................
Well, just when you think that there can't be anymore original documents to be found on 'The Sound Of Young Scotland' something like this turns up on the web.
These A4-size documents are from The Future Past (issue #1) fanzine which was founded in 1981 and created by three chaps going by the names of Martin Peake, Charles McCartan, and Jozsef Balogh; all from Dudley, in the West Midlands region of England. Copies come courtesy of the amazing archive of fanzines and whatnot that Jake (a.k.a. stillunusual ) posts at his Flickr account.

Read below what Jake has to say about the fanzine and the interview with Orange Juice included in it:

"The editorial on page 2 of this early 1980s midlands fanzine proclaims it to be the first issue of a “soon-to-be-famous” magazine. Sadly, that fame was never achieved - in fact I don’t even know if the authors managed to bring out a second issue - but it’s not a bad effort.

There’s an informative interview with Scottish band Orange Juice, which took place before a gig at the Lafayette club in Wolverhampton and includes an interesting anecdote about Pete Shelley, as well as the fact that their song “Blue Boy” is about him. Two years later, after the band had left indie label Postcard (“The Sound of Young Scotland”) for Polydor and achieved a degree of mainstream success, their biggest hit “Rip It Up” also contained a tribute to
Shelley and the Buzzcocks…."

Additional information from Sound of Young Scotland @Kiltr :

Orange Juice : Ostrich Churchyard ad

Well, first post of this new year is yet another excellent Postcard Records ad for Orange Juice's 'Ostrich Churchyard' album. The recordings featured on this album are what should have been Orange Juice's debut LP, had it been released during the original Postcard Records set up.
Instead, it was issued in 1992 during the revival of "Europe's Only Avant Garde Recording Company." Ad contains a lot of the images featured in the adjoing booklet that came with the album.
