Be Part of the Amazing Teenage Superstars!

From the makers of 'Big Gold Dream' comes the story of the The Fall of Postcard and the Rise of 53rd & 3rd Records, 'Teenage Superstars'.

"Big Gold Dream: Scottish Post Punk and Infiltrating the Mainstream. Teenage Superstars picks up where we left off with Big Gold Dream - the demise of Postcard Mk. 1, along with Fast Product shutting up shop."

After the brilliant BGD this time Grant McPhee and his team will be telling the story of the second wave of great Scottish, indie bands that appeared from the early to late 80s. Bands like The Pastels, Shop Assistants, The Vaselines, Simple Minds (oops!), The Jesus And Mary Chain, Primal Scream, Teenage Fanclub, etc. etc.

For the time being the film is still in the post-production stage. So far the lads have made a great effort in managing to complete the film and licence the music for it but, to complete their post production process, they need some financial support. They need your assistance to pay for things like archive clearances (footage of Nirvana costs a lot more than a sausage roll from Greggs!), and the likes of insurance, and marketing.

So, go ahead, Punk! Send in a couple of £s, $s, €s, and Make Their Day !

If you want to help crowd fund the film you can make a donation here.

Here what Bill Drummond (KLF) has to say about the film here.

The Sound of Young Scotland - Documentaries

In this month's MOJO (February 2015 issue) you can read all about two forthcoming Grant McPhee documentaries highlighting the independent music scene in Scotland from 1977 to 1994. Both films feature interviews and footage of all the important players who take part in all of it.

Watch the trailer for these films at the links below:

The Big Gold Dream - Scottish Post-Punk, DIY And Infiltrating The Mainstream (1977-1985)

Songs From Northern Britain - The Country That Invented Indie Music (1986 - 1994)

Additional information from Sound of Young Scotland @Kiltr :
"Some things you never knew about Postcard Records: photographer Peter McArthur (who took all those amazing Strawberry Switchblade stills) was responsible for the name of the label, and Orange Juice drummer - Steven Daly - coined the phrase: 'The Sound of Young Scotland.' "

Simple Minds : New Gold Dream (badge)

Getting away from the (mostly) Postcard Records stuff that I post for the moment and moving onto other Scottish bands that I've neglected a bit.  Bands like Simple Minds, The Associates, and Teenage Fanclub. Three great bands (at least for a few years for the first two) whom I really liked at some moment in my life. Of course, Teenage Fanclub and Simple Minds are still doing the rounds; the latter having released a brand new album just last month (Oct. 2014), but the much regretted Associates more or less fell apart when Alan Rankine left the band in 1982 shortly after the release of the fabulous 'Sulk' album. Rankine's departure leading to the late Billy MacKenzie more or less embarking on a solo career; albeit under the Associates name, until around 1990. Almost everything released after 1982 paled by comparison to the bands' previous output. A spent force in which; apart from a couple of Mackenzie's later solo efforts, I lost interest. Simple Minds, I lost interest in them shortly after the 'Once Upon A Time' album (1985). I like, and still do, most of the stuff released beforehand. Might have been the fact that they had turned into a stadium rock band, à la U2, that put me off them. I imagine though that it was some other band (more than likely The Jesus And Mary Chain) that had caught my fancy. I'd moved on to other pastures. As for Teenage Fanclub; that's another story which I'll come back to later.

More posts on these bands up soon. (japanese forms)

Tracklist:

- The Assumption As An Elevator

Artwork by Jim Lambie.

A bit of a rarity this 3-track EP by The Boy Hairdressers on Stephen Pastel's 53rd & 3rd label. From the ashes of this band rose the mighty and fabulous Teenage Fanclub. World-renowned, contemporary visual artist, Jim Lambie, was also a member of this short-lived outfit. Lambie's most recent installation is 'The Album Pathway'; created as part of the commission for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Cultural Programme. In total more than 2000 bands are referenced in the work.
I've already featured this disc in a previous post but this one is a shot of the label on the actual vinyl. I've also updated the photo of the cover art at my Flickr page.

Will be back soon with some news on the upcoming Testament release; a comprehensive 'best of' collection by The Wake on Factory Benelux.

promotional copy

I obtained this disc under the same circumstances as the previous TFC promo of The King album
. Actually, I have two copies of this one (I don't know why); both are still in mint condition. As with most Creation Records promo discs from that era it comes in a plain white generic Creation promo sleeve which sports the label logo on the front and the mention: A Creation Records Product. Printed on the back of the sleeve it has: Promotional Copy Only and the label's address. Band name, track titles and catalogue number are printed on one side only of the white label. I don't know if there are many of these about but I imagine it must be on the wishlist of any true TFC collector. one2zero

creation records promo cassette for the same album

Album deleted on the first day of release. (wiki)
I really liked Teenage Fanclub back when this was released -their debut album and singles were quite fabulous. Working in record distribution I got the promo tape a couple of weeks before the official album was released. I, of course, immediately snapped up a cd copy the day it arrived in the warehouse. Next day the album was withdrawn from sale due to some sort of contractual problem or whatever (see wiki link above). It's a bit of a collector's item, I imagine, but I'm sure that there must be quite a few copies about. As for me, I haven't bought anything by the band since around 1995 but I've got almost everything issued by them prior to that. So, expect more "Teenage Fanclub" posts because I have quite a decent collection of their earlier releases. That includes their before-they-became-TFC 12" Boy Hairdressers EP! one2zero

3-track ep

Second EP by the short-lived Captain America formed by Eugene Kelly after The Vaselines split in 1989. Kelly formed Captain America -with friends and members of BMX Bandits and Teenage Fanclub- in 1990 but was forced to change the name to Eugenius when Marvel Comics objected about the use of their copyright to the name. Wonder what C&A had to say about this artwork?
