Postcard Records Kitten Tattoo!
I've been, as per usual, sort of busy since my last post (all of 6 weeks ago) but I should get round to adding a couple of things this week or so. Maybe a things that I've already posted on Twitter; I'll see what's worth posting. Anyhow, today we have a photo of a Postcard Records, drumming kitten tattoo. Generously and courtesy of the lovely Bea Dewhurst. You can catch up with vintage clothing archivist and researcher Bea's recent adventures in Paris at her photoblog (and at Flickr) and follow her, as well as more of her "cats", on Twitter.

The Psychedelic Etchings of the Smooth
One of the many documents and original pieces of memorabilia you'll be able to see at the upcoming exhibition, organized The Scottish Music Centre, at the Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh on the 16th to 18th of June this year.
So, if any of you are in Edinburgh, on those dates, take time to check out the exhibition.
One of the items on show is this nifty little 'Postcard Communique'. Something that James Kirk (Orange Juice) put together in the early days of Postcard Records in 1979. Features the wee 'Drumming Kitten' from an original Louis Wain drawing that was used as the Postcard logo.

Postcard Records Hope To Update The Whole Velvet Underground
Postcard Records Hope To Update The Whole Velvet Underground
Now this is really an interesting document. Have never seen this before. Apparently it's a press release dating from around mid-1980 with Postcard (Alan Horne) presenting the label's three latest and what they hoped would be their forthcoming releases for January 1981. Unfortunately, the Josef K album never saw the light of day; the first vinyl issue of their debut album was finally released in November 2012 on LTM Recordings. Neither did the "new discoveries" Altered Images or Fire Engines singles ever appear on the label but that's another story. A story you can read about in Simon Goddard's recent 'Simply Thrilled:The Preposterous Story of Postcard Records' book.
Once again I'd like to thank Paul Haig (Josef K) for providing me with copies of such great documents.

Return To Sender : Postcard Records
I've just been given access to some exciting documents by Paul Haig (Josef K). I'll be posting a few here over the next few days I imagine and would sincerely like to thank Paul for giving permission to do so. A good few of these documents are pretty rare; I don't recall ever seeing some of them before. First up we have a scan of a page of a Stuart Maconie article which dates back to the early 90s I imagine. There's no mention of which magazine it is but it might be from the NME, Select or Mojo. Includes the full Postcard Discography (released/unreleased) which I've reproduced in a larger format below.

Orange Juice
L.O.V.E...Love (label details)
Postcard Records (1981)
Polydor POSPX 357
Label details for Orange Juice's first venture on Polydor. It's a pity the Postcard/Polydor collaboration was so short. I really like the fact that Postcard's drumming cat logo has a place of choice on the label.

A Trainspotter Writes...
This post previously appeared here in June, 2007. It's been updated with a better photograph.

While packing some things the other day, I came across an old notebook in which I used to write lists and references of discs that I wanted to acquire. Inside this, I found some cuttings from long-binned copies of the NME.-I've no idea when this one was printed but I imagine it was in the early 90s or thereabouts. The cuttings were mostly lists that the magazine published of the ten most sought after / best releases by various bands or labels. There were Sonic Youth and Suicide lists among others and, amazingly, the one above featuring Postcard Records. Back then, I had marked the discs that I had in the list -correcting an error for the 'Simply Thrilled Honey' catalogue number- and, in my atrocious handwriting, added below the cat. N°, the title, and band name for Josef K's 'It's Kinda Funny' single that wasn't included in the list. In all, just a bit of paper but a nice little addition to the blog. The paper has yellowed a bit. Image also features Orange Juice's 'Love Sick / Blue Boy sleeve. japanese forms

orange juice postcard (?)
Another find on the net. Supposed to be an Orange Juice postcard for the "You Can't Hide Your Love Forever" album. Can't recall this at all unless it was some kind of promotional thing. I copied the image from some Tumblr page* but, as usual, there was no information about its origin attached to the post. If anybody can help me out, I'll be glad to have any information on this. Anyhow, I'll be getting back to posting some original pics soon -notably a whole series of Orange Juice 12" singles that I've finally gotten out of the box that they've been stored in since my time in Glasgow in 2007-2008. japanese forms
*Lots of people on Tumblr have been "borrowing" my own Sound of Young Scotland & Flickr images for ages. It's next to impossible to prevent this on the web so its no real gripe as I occasionally "borrow" a pic too. Difference is that I always try to find out who took the photo and give it its credit if possible. It-really annoys me that there are assholes who "steal" my photos and post them as their own !

postcard records badge(s)
This post is in reply to a recent comment (about this badge) made by a visitor... A visitor (Brian Hull?) who correctly pointed out that the badge in the above link was neither an original nor an "official" Postcard Records one. So here are a couple of examples of the original, official badges. One with a black background and one with a blue background. The black one is still intact, and in mint condition, whereas the blue has unfortunately developed some sort of stain... I imagine some rainwater infiltrated it when I wore it (for years) on my denim, Levis jacket back in the day. Unlike the denim jacket, which wouldn't possibly fit me nowadays, I've kept these badges for what must now be at least 30 years. Authentic and true artefacts of the wonderful but too short Postcard era. japanese forms
