Exciting Records From Trendy Places
A wee round up on the exciting releases coming out of Scotland on this day (8th of January) in 1981. A short tour of the burgeoning Scottish music scene with the one and only release by the Australian band, The Go-Betweens on Glasgow's Postcard Records, via Greenock and the Cuban Heels to Edinburgh with the wonderous 'Get Up And Use Me' by Fire Engines and the latest single from Another Pretty Face on the Chicken Jazz label.

Postcard Records Hope To Update The Whole Velvet Underground
Postcard Records Hope To Update The Whole Velvet Underground
Now this is really an interesting document. Have never seen this before. Apparently it's a press release dating from around mid-1980 with Postcard (Alan Horne) presenting the label's three latest and what they hoped would be their forthcoming releases for January 1981. Unfortunately, the Josef K album never saw the light of day; the first vinyl issue of their debut album was finally released in November 2012 on LTM Recordings. Neither did the "new discoveries" Altered Images or Fire Engines singles ever appear on the label but that's another story. A story you can read about in Simon Goddard's recent 'Simply Thrilled:The Preposterous Story of Postcard Records' book.
Once again I'd like to thank Paul Haig (Josef K) for providing me with copies of such great documents.

Return To Sender : Postcard Records
I've just been given access to some exciting documents by Paul Haig (Josef K). I'll be posting a few here over the next few days I imagine and would sincerely like to thank Paul for giving permission to do so. A good few of these documents are pretty rare; I don't recall ever seeing some of them before. First up we have a scan of a page of a Stuart Maconie article which dates back to the early 90s I imagine. There's no mention of which magazine it is but it might be from the NME, Select or Mojo. Includes the full Postcard Discography (released/unreleased) which I've reproduced in a larger format below.

Postcard Records : Brochure (p.10)
From the original Postcard Records brochure from 1981. I'd really love to have an original copy of this but I can't imagine that there are many of them about. If there are any available, I imagine that they must be selling for quite a lot of money nowadays. This is page 10; which is a sort of collage that so many fanzines favoured back then. The whole thing consists of 39 fun-filled pages of information as well as lots of photographs by Robert Sharp of the label's finest.
I sourced this image from kraizeekattbut there are PDF copies of the magazine to be found on the web.
Update : Robert S. has kindly provided us with a link to a PDF copy of the whole brochure. Check it out here.

A Trainspotter Writes...
This post previously appeared here in June, 2007. It's been updated with a better photograph.

While packing some things the other day, I came across an old notebook in which I used to write lists and references of discs that I wanted to acquire. Inside this, I found some cuttings from long-binned copies of the NME.-I've no idea when this one was printed but I imagine it was in the early 90s or thereabouts. The cuttings were mostly lists that the magazine published of the ten most sought after / best releases by various bands or labels. There were Sonic Youth and Suicide lists among others and, amazingly, the one above featuring Postcard Records. Back then, I had marked the discs that I had in the list -correcting an error for the 'Simply Thrilled Honey' catalogue number- and, in my atrocious handwriting, added below the cat. N°, the title, and band name for Josef K's 'It's Kinda Funny' single that wasn't included in the list. In all, just a bit of paper but a nice little addition to the blog. The paper has yellowed a bit. Image also features Orange Juice's 'Love Sick / Blue Boy sleeve. japanese forms
