Paul Haig : Les Disques du Crépuscule tapes

Well yesterday was once more Cassette Store Day. Not nearly as big as event as Record Store Day has become but one than seems to be gaining impetus as the format (doomed to disappear completely) makes a (sort of) comeback. Anyhow, I didn't pick up any tapes myself but was glad to receive the above pic which Postcard aficionado, Graeme McNay sent me. I don't recall ever having seen a Paul Haig tape but Graeme has managed to acquire two of them.
The 5-track 'The Only Truth' tape was released on Island/Les Disques Du Crépuscule in 1984; whereas the 'Warp of Pure Fun' tape, which appears to be pretty rare (it isn't listed at Discogs), was released apparently only in Belgium in late 1985 at the same time as the vinyl version.

Wouldn't mind at all if the recently revived Les Disques du Crépuscule reissued these tapes.

Some of the interesting things you'll see on a long-distance flight.

Dialogue North/South Tour, 1982

Flyer from a Les Disques du Crépuscule show at the Beursschouwburg in Brussels in 1982. Paul Haig heads the bill on a night that also featured Richard Jobson (former lead singer with the Skids and later TV presenter and film director), The Names (who would records some really fine discs with Factory Benelux and Les Disques du Crépuscule), and Winston Tong from Tuxedomoon. This show was part of a tour that played 14 or so dates across Belgium, France, and the Netherlands. The tour "centered around a flexible core of The Durutti Column, Richard Jobson, The Names and Paul Haig. Also playing at various dates were Antena, Marine, Isolation Ward, and Tuxedomoon regulars Blaine Reininger, Steven Brown and Winston Tong."

A cassette tape live recording of the "Dialogue North/South" tour appeared later that year under the title of 'Some of the interesting things you'll see on a long distance flight' (TWI 081) and featured 5 tracks from Paul Haig as well as several from Richard Jobson and Tuxedomoon, The Durutti Column, etc. (see full tracklist here).

The tape is a valuable document from the golden era of Les Disques du Crépuscule and a must have for anyone who likes Paul Haig's music.

First release by NME / Rough Trade Tapes 1981. To get this you had to order it through the New Musical Express. 30,000 copies were sent out. As well as the tape, I still have the original 32-page Owner's Manual; which you had to put together by cutting out various pages over a number of weeks from the NME and then folding and assembling them. You had to be patient in those days. Home computers and internet weren't around then. Looking at these pages one can see how much the Velvet Underground was important to Alan Horne and the whole conception of what he wanted Postcard to be.

Dora Maar : 'Dora Marr' - tape

https://www.flickr.com/photos/japaneseforms/11435727603/
Well, as we plod on towards the end of 2013, with everyone and anyone making their -often predictable- end of the year 'best of' lists, it was a nice surprise this week to get acces to two extremely enjoyable recordings hailing from Bonnie Scotland. The first one is a recording from yesteryear; of one of the mighty Orange Juice's very early concerts at Glasgow Technical College in 1980 (more about this at a later date), and the other one is the debut release from Dora Maar.
No, not the Dora Maar, French photographer, poet and painter who is, unfortunately, better known for having been one of Picasso's lovers than for her own work, but a young band from Leith, Edinburgh. A place I don't really know much about except that it's a port/docks area in Edinburgh and that (in)famous Scots novelist, Hibernian F.C. fan, Irvine Welsh grew up there. In fact, the very few times I've ever visited the place it would have been to see football games between the Hibees and Rangers F.C. Way back in the day when I was interested in football. A time when clubs didn't even have sponsors' names on their shirts so you can imagine how long ago that was.
Anyhow, according to their press release, the band is made up of "two Andrews, an Erika and a Liam". I'm not really sure who plays what in the band but I'm certain that it's one of the male members on vocals. From the very, and wee bit ramshackle, start it's clear whom the band's influences are. In fact, they could have called this release, en hommage, 'A Postcard From Leith' as they sound and appear to be highly influenced by early ('80/'81) Postcard Records' bands Josef K and Orange Juice. Besides the 'Postcard' influence there's also some Monochrome Set, Pastels, Vic Godard shaping their sound. Not to forget the Velvet Undergound which appears to me to be most visible on the opening 'Jessica Says' track. Starting off with jangly guitar, pounding drumbeat, followed by vocals that sound like a hybrid version of Edwyn Collins and Paul Haig, 'Jessica Says' has me thinking of a speeded-up version of VU's 'Stephanie Says'. This is followed by my favourite track 'The 'Fetch'', which commences with a militarylike drumbeat, laid back guitar, before the dulcet tones of the vocalist come to the forefront and, in spite of what sounds like a sorry tale of "punishment", delivers a beauty of a song.  'Anna Karina, 1965' is a close second fave; I'll put this down to it being, in my mind, the most Josef K-like track along with the sublime 'I Won't Be Back' which is the last track on this, too short, tape. Lots of varying influences doesn't mean lack of originality and Dora Marr have the spunk and promise of greater things to come.
At any rate; despite recording/mixing quality, which isn't that great but at the same time is definitely part of its charm, this is a very commendable and exciting debut release. So, if jangling guitars and compelling melodies are your thing, get your hands on a copy a.s.a.p.* (japanese forms)
* ‘Dora Maar’ is limited to an initial run of 50 hand-numbered, hand-stamped cassettes (download included) will be available from the band’s Bandcamp on 11 December 2013 (11.12.13, ya dig?). Further physical stockists TBA.

edwyn collins : hope and despair (tape)

Tape cassette of Edwyn Collins' great 1989 'Hope and Despair' album. I've hade this (as well as the vinyl version) ever since it came out; cassettes were great (for then) in car listening pleasure and I used to buy lots of them. Still have numerous tapes: you can check some of them out here.

creation records promo cassette for the same album

Album deleted on the first day of release. (wiki)
I really liked Teenage Fanclub back when this was released -their debut album and singles were quite fabulous. Working in record distribution I got the promo tape a couple of weeks before the official album was released. I, of course, immediately snapped up a cd copy the day it arrived in the warehouse. Next day the album was withdrawn from sale due to some sort of contractual problem or whatever (see wiki link above). It's a bit of a collector's item, I imagine, but I'm sure that there must be quite a few copies about. As for me, I haven't bought anything by the band since around 1995 but I've got almost everything issued by them prior to that. So, expect more "Teenage Fanclub" posts because I have quite a decent collection of their earlier releases. That includes their before-they-became-TFC 12" Boy Hairdressers EP! one2zero

Teenage Fanclub have just released a brand new album.
