Cutting from the NME (circa 1985, I reckon) featuring Edwyn Collins in the 'Portrait of the Artist as a Consumer' section. Edwyn gives us the lowdown on his favourite sounds, drink, books, etc. as well as other things that he dislikes.
Otherwise, in the Hot Tips bit Edwyn mentions then fairly unknown bands, Pride of the Cross and Sonic Youth. Pride of the Cross only lasted the length of one single release before a couple of the members split to join The Pogues. Wonder what happened to Sonic Youth?

The Pipsqueaks Rip It Up !

Thirty-three years ago today Orange Juice on the cover and featured in a two-page spread by Adrian Thrills in New Musical Express. Here's the cover with a lovely Kevin Cummins pic of Zeke & Edwyn.

Postcard Strip-Ad for Blue Boy (reissue)

An ad for Postcard Recordings of Scotland when the the label was resuscitated in the early 1990s.
This is the sort of thing that makes me wish I hadn't binned all my old NMEs and other such weeklies and magazines so long ago. Taken from the NME, 12th of June 1993 this cutting features an ad announcing the forthcoming reissue release of Orange Juice's 'Blue Boy' single and the 'The Heather's On Fire' compilation as well as future releases from Vic Godard, Paul Quinn, and The Nectarine N°9.

Full of rather homoerotic undertones and tongue-in-cheek blurbs it would probably irk some of the politically correct crowd nowadays. Distasteful and sexist they'd say. They'd find it offensive, be indignant for five minutes and then get back to their Caramel Brulée Latte, their smartphones and all the utter bollocks that's on Twitter, Facebook etc. etc.

Anyhow, I wonder what those involved with this ad (i.e. the Postcard artists showcased on it) would have to say about it these days?

First release by NME / Rough Trade Tapes 1981. To get this you had to order it through the New Musical Express. 30,000 copies were sent out. As well as the tape, I still have the original 32-page Owner's Manual; which you had to put together by cutting out various pages over a number of weeks from the NME and then folding and assembling them. You had to be patient in those days. Home computers and internet weren't around then. Looking at these pages one can see how much the Velvet Underground was important to Alan Horne and the whole conception of what he wanted Postcard to be.

Mary Chain 10

Another one of my cuttings from a long-binned copy of the NME. This one features a (Jesus and)Mary Chain 10 compiled by 'The Ringing Sound' of Dunedin, New Zealand. I've no idea what the 'Ringing Sound' is or was/were but I would imagine that it was some sort of record shop or radio show back in the 80s. The paper is a wee bit yellowed and (as with the Postcards 10 list) I've marked with a pen the JAMC discs that I had at that moment on it. Photo features some of my Mary Chain 45s. A Trainspotter Writes...

While packing some things the other day, I came across an old notebook in which I used to write lists and references of discs that I wanted to acquire. Inside this, I found some cuttings from long-binned copies of the NME.-I've no idea when this one was printed but I imagine it was in the early 90s or thereabouts. The cuttings were mostly lists that the magazine published of the ten most sought after / best releases by various bands or labels. There were Sonic Youth and Suicide lists among others and, amazingly, the one above featuring Postcard Records. Back then, I had marked the discs that I had in the list -correcting an error for the 'Simply Thrilled Honey' catalogue number- and, in my atrocious handwriting, added below the cat. N°, the title, and band name for Josef K's 'It's Kinda Funny' single that wasn't included in the list. In all, just a bit of paper but a nice little addition to the blog. The paper has yellowed a bit. Image also features Orange Juice's 'Love Sick / Blue Boy sleeve. japanese forms

NME Playing Cards

I thought that there might be an Orange Juice/Edwyn Collins playing card in this set of NME playing cards but unfortunately there isn't one. On the other hand there are two featuring Bobby Gillespie (Primal Scream) and Jim and William Reid (The Jesus and Mary Chain). The original photographs used on these cards are by Kevin Cummins -whom most folks know for his legendary shots of Joy Division.
You can have a look at the full set here. I've had them ever since the pack was given away free with the New Musical Express in 1991.
