Rip It Up

Poster ad for Orange Juice's 1983 'Rip It Up single. Probably the groups' best known track from OJ's second album of the same name. One of their few discs that made it into the top ten; climbing all the way to the number 8 spot in the UK singles chart. It would also be the band's last real success before they split in 1985.

L.O.V.E... it's a hit!

Some more fabulous documents from Rob Waters' Postcard Records archives. This time we have an ad and a review for their 'L.O.V.E... love / Intuition Told Me' their major label debut single on Polydor/Postcard. Rob reckons this is from an October 1981 issue of Record Mirror but I have a feeling that it might well be from a copy of the NME from the same period.

Fab uncredited shot of the lads optimistically pointing towards the number one spot in the hit parade.

Orange Juice : Original artwork (1)

Some very exciting images of orignal artwork for a few Orange Juice releases have been forwarded to me by Scots post-punk. they belong to one Steve McNamee who picked them up for a song (indeed!) an an auction a few years ago. This one features the artwork for the 'Two Hearts Together / Hokoyo" single that was released in 1982. Artwork by Pete Watson.

Orange Juice : Rip It Up (poster)

As with Factory Records (particularly anything related to Joy Division and New Order) there has been a huge resurgence of interest in bands from the Sound of Young Scotland, Postcard Records era the past few years. Bands like Orange Juice, Josef K, Fire Engines, Scars, and a whole host of others are enjoying a popularity that was distnctly lacking for a few of them in their heyday. Books have been published, exhibitions set up, films and documentaries are arriving in cinemas soon. Of course, most of these bands no longer exist but some continue to record and play under various other guises and line-ups. It's a whole new lease of life that's opened up to quite a few those musicians thanks to a few people who are setting the record straight, filing the facts, -while nostalgia beats its incessant drum and some of us hark back on the days of our long gone and, what seems in some cases, a not so misspent youth.

Thanks to some fans more and more unseen goodies are cropping up every now and then on the net. Today's image comes courtesy of Ayrshire lad, Graeme McNay -who besides cycling appears to be a huge music fan and particularly one of Orange Juice.

Label details for Orange Juice's first venture on Polydor. It's a pity the Postcard/Polydor collaboration was so short. I really like the fact that Postcard's drumming cat logo has a place of choice on the label.

Well, as promised in the previous post, I've been going through my vinyl storage boxes and have managed to dig out some of my Orange Juice vinyls. Haven't found, so far, all of the OJ discs that I possess but this will do as a start. Here we have 4 of the bands 12" EPs released on Polydor (except for the 'Felicity' ep which was a Postcard / Polydor release - it carries the Postcard "drumming kitten" logo on both the sleeve and labels). Sleeves are still in excellent condition and the vinyl is mint on all four. I really like the artwork on the 'Bridge' and particularly the Alwyn Clayden & Paul White artwork on 'Felicity' - looks so much better than portraits used on the other two. Mind you, Edwyn's quiff on 'What Presence' is a gold medal winner in the World Class Hair category. More up soon. japanese forms

orange juice postcard (?)

Another find on the net. Supposed to be an Orange Juice postcard for the "You Can't Hide Your Love Forever" album. Can't recall this at all unless it was some kind of promotional thing. I copied the image from some Tumblr page* but, as usual, there was no information about its origin attached to the post. If anybody can help me out, I'll be glad to have any information on this. Anyhow, I'll be getting back to posting some original pics soon -notably a whole series of Orange Juice 12" singles that I've finally gotten out of the box that they've been stored in since my time in Glasgow in 2007-2008. japanese forms


 *Lots of people on Tumblr have been "borrowing" my own Sound of Young Scotland & Flickr images for ages. It's next to impossible to prevent this on the web so its no real gripe as I occasionally "borrow" a pic too. Difference is that I always try to find out who took the photo and give it its credit if possible. It-really annoys me that there are assholes who "steal" my photos and post them as their own !
